PEDRO ACOSTA BECOMES 2023 MOTO2 WORLD CHAMPION

The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider takes his second world title in Malaysia.

This Sunday, Pedro Acosta was proclaimed Moto2 World Champion at the Thai Grand Prix, finishing second. With two races remaining, the Spaniard clinched his second world title in just 3 years, thanks to 7 victories and 14 podiums so far this season.

Acosta began 2023 with a clear objective and showed his quality from the first race. The start of the campaign at the Portuguese Grand Prix was also the beginning of a streak of great results, with the first victory of the year coming at Portimao. The Red Bull KTM Ajo rider won again at Austin, while at the Spanish Grand Prix he placed second. A crash in France meant his only race without points this term. Subsequently, Acosta rounded the first half of the season off with an almost perfect run, winning at Mugello and Sachsenring and placing third at Assen. In doing so, he closed the gap in the standings and even increased his lead at each race.

The return after the summer break was when he turned up the pace, at the same time showing his maturity in the intermediate class and demonstrating his ability to manage and adapt to each of the Grands Prix. Silverstone and Austria saw Acosta on the podium again, finishing third and second, respectively. San Marino, India and Indonesia also saw further victories, and a podium in Japan with third place kept his streak going. At the Thai Grand Prix, Acosta had his first chance to clinch the title and, after his second place finish, this weekend he has further boosted his title chances. With his second position after a great race in Sepang, Pedro Acosta is now two-time World Champion after a spectacular season in Moto2.

Acosta became the 2023 Moto2 World Champion as almost an ever-present on the podium, missing out on the rostrum just four times. With two world titles under his belt, he will make the jump to MotoGP in 2024 as part of the KTM GP Academy program. It is a system implemented by the manufacturer to identify and develop top talent, through Moto3 and Moto2, and give them the opportunity to reach the MotoGP class.
